ancient remedies
Dr. Josh Axe shows us that there are things that have been used for healing for millennia that are still useful and available today. These range from herbs to essential oils; from CBD oil to meditation. Dr. Axe is a wealth of knowledge on Traditional Chinese Medicine and Ayurvedic principles.
Dr. Axe shows us the paths the Ancients took to achieve good health and contrasts this with the multitude of pills that people take today to achieve good health. The idea that Western medicine is ‘sick care’ while ancient remedies are ‘healthcare’ is introduced and explained.
I found this book incredibly insightful, easy to read and was comforted by Dr. Axe’s mention of Biblical practices as well as Eastern medicine ideas. Our culture has come to view naturopathic medicine as ‘alternative’ or voodoo, when indeed, these health and wellness practices have been around far longer than our pharmaceutical-saturated way of life.
If you want an easy entry into ‘alternative medicine’, this is a good starter kit.
the four agreements
by Don Miguel Ruiz
Knowing about this book is like belonging to a secret society. Most of the amazing women who have influenced me over the past 10 years have read this book. It’s like chicken soup for the soul, but not so gimicky.
Once you digest the Four Agreements and put them into practice, you can realize a sense of peace and confidence that you may not have known before. While not ground-breaking practices, these concepts will truly open your eyes to what a life of integrity and contentment can really look like.
I found this book to be invaluable in growth into a confident, happy woman. In fact, after i read it, I bought 4 copies to have on hand to give as gifts. I knew that God would put just the right people in my path at just the right time to receive this as a gift. It’s been about 3 years and I have finally given away the last copy.
This book is only 160 pages. While it can be read in 1 sitting, I highly suggest that you savor it, take notes and reflect on each section before moving on. I like to reread this book periodically to re-center myself.
witness
by Ariel Burger
This is another great book for self-reflection. I stumbled on it after I heard Ariel on NPR. (I’m an NPR junkie.)
It’s hard to summarize or describe this book. It is based on the teachings of Professor Elie Wiesel, Nobel Laureate, activist, author and Holocaust survivor..
To say Professor Wiesel was a humanitarian is an understatement. He was kind and gentle and most of all humble. He seems to me to be the epitome of a decent man. I was awed and humbled myself by reading this book. Professor Wiesel was friends with Barak Obama and Oprah but he truly cared about all of his students.
This book gave me something to aspire to. As I try to build a business and a brand, it reminded me how to be a good human. To be a witness to suffering. To remember. To understand the words in the silence.
